Celebrating #BookGivingDay and #LibraryLoversDay

By Katrina Fox - February 14, 2018

Book Giving Day and Library Lovers Day A Squash and a squeeze, time for bed little one, hairy maclary from donaldsons dairy

It's #BookGivingDay and #LibraryLoversDay on the same day. Best Day Ever.

I've always loved reading and it has always been a dream of mine to read as a family and bring that love of literature into our home. From the moment Iris was born I've read to her. In the hospital we had no children's books with us so I read her a catalogue! I think there is something magical about the rhythmic, soothing tones of a parent reading to a child so I started doing that as soon as I could. Here are some of our family favourites to read with Iris;

The Childhood Favourite.

Hairy Maclary from Donaldson's Dairy has stuck with me for my entire life. I can't remember the first time I read it but I know it made an impression. I imagine I read it repeatedly. I knew from the moment I found out I was pregnant that this would be the first book I read to my child. It's a wonderful rhyming tale of dogs, friendship and a very large cat. A fun read with memorable characters, quirky illustrations and a charming storyline.

The New Favourite.

I bought Iris a Julia Donaldson Book bag containing 10 different books, all of them are fantastic to read aloud, beautifully illustrated and have important messages but I just love A Squash and A Squeeze. I like that it encourages counting and rhyming and introduces different animals but I really love that the story teaches us about perspective and to appreciate what we have.

The Surprise.

I think there is a bit of a penchant for certain authors and titles in the childrens book industry and that leads to some lesser known, or rather less publicised/televised, books to fall under the radar. A good book doesn't have to be the one most talked about or the one that all your childs friends have. Take a chance and choose something random. This is one of my favourite books to read at naptime and it was a bargain on The Works mix and match offer. It is lovely woodland tale about nocturnal animals, and balancing the need for sleep with the desire to play. It has a great message about balance and teaches children about lots of different animals and their sleeping patterns.
